IUID Labels and IUID Nameplates

IUID Definition

What is an IUID label? An Item Unique Identifier Data (IUID) label or IUID nameplate marks items sold to the U.S. Department of the Defense (DoD). These markings comply with Military Standard 130 (MIL-STD-130) ‘Identification Marking of U.S. Military Property’. It includes the 2005 addition of Item Unique Identifier Data (IUID) matrix-readable information. The standard describes the rules and syntax, allowable materials, text size, fonts, and format, as well as where to locate the marking, and its exceptions.

IUID Label vs UID Label

What is difference between an IUID label and a UID label? An IUID label is an evolved version of the original Unique Identifier Data (UID) specification. A revision to the standard prepended an ‘I’ to eliminate confusion with UID or unique identifier, which already was in common use.

Jet City Laser, Inc. offers three data layout options for IUID Military Standard 130 label and nameplate compliance: 1) Construct 1, 2) Construct 2, and 3) Part Number Only.

Construct 2 includes the CAGE Code, serial number, and part number. Serialization is at the part number level.

Part Number only, as the name implies, the 2D code includes only the part number.

DoD Contract Requirements: DoD requires that qualified IUID labels, asset tags, and marking is essential for:

  • Equipment with an acquisition cost of over $5,000
  • Equipment which is mission essential
  • Controlled inventory
  • Serially-controlled equipment

Specific requirements are outlined in Military Standard 130 (MIL-STD-130N) and further detailed in DFARs clause 252.211-7003.

Materials: IUID labels and nameplates are available in a wide variety of materials including AlumaMark, anodized aluminum, stainless steel, Metalphoto, TESA tape, and thermal print labels. Choose any Pantone® color for your label or nameplate text and background.

2D (Data Matrix) machine readable code: a black and white, two-dimensional barcode with cells (also known as modules) arranged in a square or rectangular pattern. The encoded data can be text or numeric. A 2D coded matrix symbol can store up to 2,335 alphanumeric characters.
