This is an official game ball for the American Basketball League. The mark was made by cutting into the ball material with a CO2 laser. The dark color is a normal by-product of the cutting process.
Using a laser, this marking was deep engraved into an anodized aluminum sleeve which is designed to be used inside a laser.
